Safe Abortion Pills Duration
Mifepristone will always be a combination of two pills, misoprostol and mifepristone taken in succession up to 48 hours apart.
The two abortion pills, mifepristone and misoprostol, are taken together as a combination. Mifepristone will always be a combination of two pills: mifepristone and misoprostol.
The first step is to take one tablet of mifepristone (also known as RU-486), which can be done at home or in a clinic. The second step is to take one tablet of misoprostol 24 to 48 hours later—you can do this at home or in a clinic.
In most cases, you can do this at home in private with minimal support or supervision.

If you choose to use the abortion pill, your doctor or clinic will give you mifepristone at the first visit. You will then take misoprostol at home between 1 to 7 days later. This method requires 2 visits:
- Visit 1: Mifeprex is given to you by your health care provider or a nurse and must be taken within 49 days of the start of your last menstrual period (LMP) for best results. This medication works by blocking progesterone and causing the lining of your uterus to break down so that it’s not suitable for pregnancy anymore. It also causes cramps that may be stronger than expected with other types of abortions, but they usually last only about 20 minutes after taking this pill.
- Visit 2: In some cases, you may need another dose of misoprostol 24 hours later if there isn’t enough bleeding after taking mifepristone alone; otherwise, follow up in 2 weeks with your provider or clinic to make sure everything went smoothly with both pills used together

Medication abortion is safe, effective and private. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone needed for pregnancy to continue. This causes the embryo to stop developing and pass out of your uterus (womb). Medication abortion is also called medical abortion or non-surgical abortion because no surgery is required. If you have an ectopic pregnancy, medication won’t work because the embryo has been implanted somewhere other than inside your uterus (womb).
While medication abortion is generally safe, there are some risks involved with any medical procedure. These medications may not work for everyone; if they don’t work for you, please visit us immediately so we can talk about alternative options available to you on our campus or off campus depending on where you live!
