NON-SURGICAL ABORTION / “ABORTION PILL”

A non-surgical abortion, commonly known as a medical or medication abortion, is a process where pregnancy is terminated using prescription medication instead of surgical methods. It’s typically administered in two steps and is most effective within the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, though it can sometimes be used a bit later with varying success rates.

Mifepristone (RU-486): This medication is the first step in a medical abortion. It blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary to maintain a pregnancy. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, and the pregnancy cannot continue.

Misoprostol: After taking mifepristone, you typically take misoprostol within a specified time frame, usually 24 to 48 hours later. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract, leading to cramping and bleeding, which expels the pregnancy tissue.

The pill blocks a hormone needed for your pregnancy to continue. When used together with another medicine they will end your pregnancy.

This non-surgical method is approximately 98% effective.

Because it comes in a pill form and is taken by mouth, you can usually avoid surgery.

Also, because it works very early in your pregnancy, it allows you to take early action to end your pregnancy.

Bleeding and cramping are a normal part of the process. The bleeding can be heavier than a normal period and usually lasts from 9-16 days. In some cases, women may have severe bleeding and then would need to contact the clinic or their doctor immediately. Your provider will instruct you on how to handle any pain, nausea, headache, vomiting, or diarrhea that could also occur.

The FDA has tested it for both safety and effectiveness. In the past decade, almost 700,000 women in Europe have safely used non-surgical abortion to end their pregnancies. It is now approved for use in more than 23 countries.

Abortion Procedure / In-Clinic Abortion

In-clinic abortion (also known as surgical abortion) is offered up to 13 weeks and 6 days after the first day of your last menstrual period.
